![]() Joined: Wed Dec 31 1969, 07:00PM Posts: 9 | I just found out from my old friend BMCS Mark Hetrick that our old ship is about to make her final voyage, I received this message from him today. Brad, A friend of mine in VA Beach just sent this to me. Looks like she is at the end of her life. I did get to board her when she was in the boneyard at Philly. My crew on the boat I drove up there from the Naval Adademy went onboard. It was great walking through the lounge/berthing compartment I lived in for 5 1/2 years! Maybe you can post this on the Bachi web site. Please tell all the shipmates I wish them the best. mark NEWPORT NEWS ? A Ghost Fleet ship from the James River will be scrapped and the metal recycle in Texas. International Shipbreaking Ltd. of Brownsville, Texas, bought the Suribachi, a breakbulk AE21 class ammunition ship, for $20,001. She?s schedule to leavethe James River Reserve Fleet on July 2. Suribachi, was built in 1956, was decommissioned in 1994 after 38 years of service. She was among the first specialized underway replenishment ships built after World War II Former Postal Clerk for Suribachi. Departed ship while on 1984 Med cruise in Agusta Bay, Sicily. Later served on USS Detriot, USS Seattle, USS Preserver. NAVCOMSTA Thurso, Scotland, SIMA Little Creek/Norfolk, VA, NMCB 14 Jax, FL, Fleet Mail Center Subic Bay, Phillippines, USNAVCENT Bahrain, USCENTCOM McDill AFB, FL. Retired from USNR June 2002. Veteran of Desert Shield/Storm (1991)and Operation Enduring Freedom (2001/2002) | ||
